Description

Hiiu-Suuremõisa developed into a manor under the German Order of the Sword before the Livonian War. The true golden age for the manor dawned in the middle of the 18th century during the tenure of Countess Ebba de la Gardie Stenbock, who had the grand castle built in place of the old single-storey boardsided structure. The Baroque manor had over 30 secondary buildings, of which the granary, coach-house, stablemaster’s house, distillery, servants’ house, girls’ house and a Dutch-style windmill survive. Today restorers of stone and timber buildings, sustainable resources management specialists and marina developers train here. Quite symbolically, horticulture students complete their practicum internships in the gardener’s house.
